Resolved Question: What should I do about my water damaged MacBook?

By Yahoo! Answers: Search for at 20 March, 2009, 11:00 am

Making a long story short: my cat knocked about a cup of water on my closed MacBook. Unfortunately, the water ran down the side where the ports are (left side). It was on, but connected to the power cord and in sleep mode.
Now it wont power on. The side with the ports smell like something burned.
I have done a bit of homework and I have heard various answers. Some say: it’s gone, destroyed. buy a new computer.
Some say it caused a part to short, and the part is fried, but it can be repaired, albeit, not cheaply.
Others say it can be repaired but it is not worth it.

I have heard that Apple charges $300 for a diagnostic fee, even if they come back and tell you it’s dead. I could put that money towards a new computer, and sell the old one for parts.

The other thing is, I have a 200 GB harddrive, with all my photos, music, movies. At the very least, I want to be able to retrieve the data on the harddrive.

Now I live in NYC and have a choice of 3 Apple stores, as well as a TekServe.
Tek Serve is good, they are an authorized Apple repair facility. They also are a bit less “by the book” than Apple (as in, might be able to replace the fried part with a gently used one etc)

Also the computer is 2.5 years old (purchased in Aug. 2006). Would it be more worth it to buy a new computer, and pay the cost of salvaging the info on the harddrive?

Or is it worth my while to try to get it repaired at Tek Serve?

Oh… and where can a get a nice burlap sack to take my cat to the nearest river.. (Just kidding. I have already forgiven him)

Chocolate-Covered PIFTS, X-Files & Mea Culpas

By davecole at 12 March, 2009, 9:12 pm

Ever had one of those days?

You really intended for things to go right, but they didn’t. And they didn’t simply whimper out of existence, but left large, smoking holes in the living room carpet. That was this Tuesday. In truth, it began on Monday evening around 4:30pm Pacific when we released a patch, the infamously named “pifts.exe”…
